When to Launch in Korea, and When to Pause: A PR Calendar for Brands

You have spent months preparing a launch. The press release is ready, the visuals are ready, the event is booked. Then, on the morning of the announcement, every headline in Korea is about something else.

Some days on the Korean calendar pull the whole country's attention in one direction: days of remembrance, days that revisit history, and holidays when families across the country share the same mood. On those days, good brand news can disappear quietly, or worse, read as tone-deaf.

That is why, at IRAE COMPANY, we treat the launch date as part of the strategy.

Three kinds of days

Seen through the lens of brand communication, the Korean year falls into three kinds of days.

PAUSEDays of remembrance. Brands step back and hold their announcements.

CHECKDays that become sensitive depending on your category or country of origin. Review your copy and visuals once more.

JOINSeasons when the whole country shares one mood. Brands can join it naturally.

January to June

Early January · New Year messages

JOINCompanies and institutions share their New Year messages. A good window for industry outlook content and forward-looking stories.

1–2 weeks before Seollal · Lunar New Year

JOINOne of Korea's two biggest holidays, centered on family, gifting and returning home. For brands in the gifting space, this is a key season. The date follows the lunar calendar and changes every year, so check it first.

March 1 · Independence Movement Day

CHECKCommemorates the 1919 independence movement against Japanese colonial rule. Japan-related brands should review their copy and timing around this date.

April · Jeju 4·3 and Sewol 4·16 remembrance days

PAUSEApril holds two memorial days: the Jeju April 3rd Incident and the 2014 Sewol ferry disaster. Light-hearted events and playful campaigns are best held back.

May 18 · May 18 Democratic Uprising

PAUSERemembers the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement, one of the weightiest memorial days in Korean society. Avoid celebratory or event-style announcements.

June 6 · Memorial Day

PAUSEHonors those who died for the country. Schedule festive promotions and sales on other dates.

July to December

July–August · Monsoon and typhoon season

CHECKHeavy rain and typhoons can cause serious damage in summer. If a major disaster strikes, pausing upbeat campaigns is a matter of basic courtesy.

August 15 · Liberation Day

CHECKMarks Korea's liberation from Japanese rule in 1945. Japanese brands should keep launches and results announcements away from this week.

1–2 weeks before Chuseok · Harvest festival

JOINKorea's other major holiday, a season of gifting, gratitude and going home. Like Seollal, its date follows the lunar calendar.

October · National Assembly audits

CHECKEach year the National Assembly audits government bodies, and company executives are sometimes called to testify. Brands in regulated industries should check for any issues that could surface.

Mid-November · Suneung

JOINKorea's national college entrance exam is a nationwide event; flights are even held during the English listening section. Messages of encouragement and support land naturally in this season.

December · Year-end giving season

JOINA season of giving and reflection. The best time to share CSR activities or year-in-review content.

For Japanese brands: two dates to remember

March 1 and August 15. The week around each of these dates carries the most conversation about Korea–Japan relations.

During these weeks, move launches and results announcements by a week, and take a second look at the copy and visuals of any campaign already running. Korean consumers notice this kind of care more than you might expect.

It is not avoidance. It is a form of respect.

Three questions before you set a launch date

You do not need to memorize the calendar. Just ask these three questions.

  • Where is the whole country's attention on that day?
  • Is it a sensitive day for your category or country of origin?
  • Is there a shared mood your brand can join?

Timing is a sense, too

At IRAE COMPANY, we believe strategy must be translated into units of sensation. When you speak shapes how your brand is felt in Korea as much as what you say.

When is your brand's launch date in Korea? And what will Korea be feeling that day?

Let's work it out together, with your partner in Seoul.
