Picture a Korean family and you probably see parents and two children around a dinner table. Most advertising in Korea still looks that way. The numbers tell a different story: the most common household in Korea today is a person living alone.
If your brand is preparing to enter Korea, these numbers are worth reading before you decide who to speak to.
One in three Korean households is one person
In 2024, Korea had about 8.05 million single-person households, 36.1% of all households. The old standard, 3-person households (18.8%) and 4-person households (12.7%), adds up to only 31.5%.

Single-person households now outnumber 3- and 4-person households combined. In 2000 the share was 15.5%. It has more than doubled in a generation.
Living alone grew most in the 30s
Single-person households are often imagined as young graduates or elderly people living alone. But between 2018 and 2024, the biggest rise came from people in their 30s.
Among households headed by someone in their 30s, the single-person share rose from 31.3% to 45.0%. Close to half of these households are now one person. This is a generation with income, clear personal taste, and full control over its own spending.

| Age of household head | 2018 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| 20s and under | 72.6% | 80.2% |
| 30s | 31.3% | 45.0% |
| 40s | 20.0% | 24.4% |
| 50s | 20.4% | 24.8% |
| 60s | 20.4% | 31.2% |
| 70s and over | 37.1% | 40.7% |

In Seoul, 4 in 10 homes are one person
Most global brands entering Korea start in Seoul. The pop-up, the flagship store, the first press event all happen there.
In Seoul, single-person households make up 39.9% of all households. In the first market your brand meets, 4 in 10 homes are one person.

Living alone grew fastest in Seoul, too
Seoul's share is not only high, it is rising fast: from 32.0% in 2018 to 39.9% in 2024, up 7.9 percentage points in six years. That is the largest increase of any province or metropolitan city in Korea.

The market brands meet first is also the one changing fastest. A picture of the Seoul consumer drawn from research a few years old may already be out of date.
Japan leads Korea, China and the U.S. in single-person homes
This is not only a Korean story. Side by side, the four countries line up as Japan 38.0%, Korea 36.1%, the United States 29% and China 25.4%. Compare the capitals and the gap is sharper: 50.3% in Tokyo, 39.9% in Seoul.

Survey years differ by country: Japan 2020, Korea 2024, U.S. 2025, China 2020.
Japan lived through the single-person society first. Smaller packs, meals for one, spaces and services designed for people on their own: what Japanese brands have refined over years at home is now an opportunity in Korea.
Three shifts for brands in the single-person era
Design for one person, not a family
Rethink size, price and packaging around one person's day. A product built for a family of four can miss the largest household type in Korea.
Treat "alone" as taste, not loneliness
73.5% of single-person households aged 25 to 59 say they are satisfied with their life. Messages that portray people living alone as lonely are unlikely to land.
Starting in Seoul? Start with one-person homes
They are 4 in 10 homes in your first market. Look at their lives, networks and tastes, and it becomes clear who to speak to first.
Beyond the numbers, we see one person
36.1%, 39.9%, 45.0%. Numbers tell you how big a market is. They don't tell you what the people in it love, or how they spend their day.
At IRAE COMPANY, we start from the numbers and look for the one person behind them. Who will your brand meet first in Korea?
